Drvenik Veliki is to be enjoyed a unique place around a calm and a recovery seed vacation. Completely particularly will it the boat drivers, Fischern, water-haven-learn or floats to please.     The island is in Middledalmation, northwest from the island Solta. The highest mountain on the island is the Buhalj with 177 meters, it is on the eastern part of the island.   The coast of the island is by many small and larger bays which in the deepest inside to sand or fine gravel beaches becomes scattered. The largest under it are “Solinska”, “Drvenik” and “Mala Luka”.  

 History   

 Called in old Rome Tariona, later in 13. Jhd. by the Illyrern Gerona, and mentioned by the Italians of late Zirona, pointed the name on the wealth of the trees. These were destroyed later at venezianischen times. For the first time the today's name of the island emerged in the year 1740 in historical books. But to their full name “Drvenik Veli” came the island only in the year 1848 if one may believe the church books.   Beginning 16. Jhd. the church developed for “sports association. Jurja”, in their is kept today still old furniture from the baroque time and old altarpieces by the painter “Antonio Grapinelli”.  A further church was built in the year 1715, it became “sports association. Nikola” mentioned and stands outside of the settlements. End 18. Jhd. renewed and so far the church never finished removes a very rich family Macanovic. In the late years of the baroque the families Tironi and Moretti extend the Fasade by some Roman and antique details.  

 Size 

   The island Veliki Drvenik has a surface of 12.07 square kilometers and the coastal length amounts to about 23 kilometers. The island is approximately 13 kilometers far away from the city Trogir and about 30 kilometers from Split. 

  Inhabitant

    Drvenik Veliki has today 908 inhabitants, these dedicates itself mainly to the cultivation of wine, cultivation of olive and the fishery. Many island inhabitants however work on the mainland or on the peninsula Ciovo. Among other things in the building of ships in Trogir or in Solin.    The city Drvenik is simultaneous the center and the largest city of the island. The locality is on the northwest side of the island and lies in a natural bay. Thus it lies close that this natural port the main transition point of the island became. The locality Drvenik got, i.e. therefore also its second name “Veliki Porat” or “Velika Luka”, which means as much as “large bay” or “large port”. Our vacation home are all in the place Drvenik.   Beyond that there are about 9 further settlements on the island.
